Christmas in the Mountains - 2015
Our First Christmas in North Carolina.
For our 2015 Christmas, Michael and I decided to close the shop for 2 weeks and spend the holiday in the mountains. This was our first time out of state together (we have been in a relationship for 10 years), this was a big deal! So on December 23rd, after my family's annual "Christmas Eve Eve" Christmas Party, we packed up the dogs and all of our things and headed north! Driving through the night wasn't too bad; it took us a total of 11 hours, Mike and I took turns sleeping and driving. We arrived at our cabin at Great Smoky Cabin Rentals in Bryson City, NC around 7 a.m. We stayed in the Native Winds Cabin, it was lovely. There was 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom w/ jacuzzi tub, 2 fireplaces, fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, hot tub and fire pit.
After we arrived to our cabin on Christmas Eve morning, we unpacked the car and went grocery shopping. I brought the majority of our food from Florida but there were a few things I still needed to get. I was planning on making Cuban for Christmas Dinner (yes Cuban, Mike's family is Cuban and it is his favorite. PLUS it was his birthday - he is a Christmas baby) and I still needed to get yuca (it is a root, and delicious). But NO ONE, I mean NO ONE had any idea what yuca was, let alone carried it in their stores. So we had to do without, I was not very happy. When we returned from our slightly unsuccessful grocery trip, we put them away and I unpacked our suitcases and the coolers.
Since we arrived ON Christmas Eve, I knew I wasn't going to be able to have a Christmas Tree, but I did want to decorate the cabin a little bit so I brought our stockings from home and some little presents; we got to hang the stockings on the fireplace, our first time with a REAL fireplace for Christmas, it was pretty awesome. I also put out some candles, holiday candies and make hot cocoa. Then, I found a mini pre-lit Christmas Tree! It was tucked away in a little storage area of the cabin, I was ECSTATIC! I didn't think we were going to have a Christmas Tree, and just having that little one meant so much. So, I put it out right away, plugged it in and put our presents under it! I loved it!
Every year starting on Christmas Eve night, I watch A Christmas Story and it continues through Christmas Day (just like on TBS). However, I don't have cable (we haven't paid for cable in 7+ years - we watch dvd's and Netflix) so I just played my dvd over and over for 24 hours. We pause and watch the Disney Parade, I mean IT IS Disney, but other than that, its A Christmas Story all day! Its a tradition!
Since we were spending the holiday in the mountains, Michael and I decided to not get each other presents. Well.......I didn't follow the rules. It is Michael's birthday Christmas Day and I couldn't let him have a birthday without opening a present. But knowing Mike, if I got him something and he didn't get me anything, he would feel bad (even though it's not necessary.) So, I ended up purchasing a few silly gifts (from me to him and from him to me) before we left; and of course I had to get the pups something also! Before heading to bed on Chrismtas Eve, I put all the presents out!
For Michael, he gets the same stocking stuffers each year....but I mean they are pretty legit stocking stuffers and he loves them. You've got your shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, "shower tool" (which is a man's way of saying LUFA), undershirts, boxers and candies. What is not to love? haha. hey.....that stuff adds up QUICK! I also got him some clothes and slippers. For myself, I got some slippers, a robe, a flannel shirt and a notebook (I'm obsessed with writing everything down!) Then of course the doggies got some toys, bones and treats!
For the remainder of the trip we relaxed and enjoyed the fresh mountain air. We sat by the fireplace, went on walks and hung out on the front porch. The temperature was beautiful but it did rain a lot of the time (which made it seem like Florida.....). But, I was in a beautiful state with the ones I love the most AND I wasn't at work, so it was perfect all the same.
